Well I want to thank all you guys who send me info on OSH. After digesting

it all, I have decided that the Dorms would be the best bet for my bride

and myself.I found out that if you  Fax to 920-424-0388 or e-mail at

uwoeaa [at] mio.owosh.edu at 8A.M. CST on May 29th. with your name, phone #, and

dates requested,  you will get a room thru the cancellation list. Last year

they received 311 such requests and all were confirmed.And correct, it is

$35.00 per night in very spartan Conditions, but it is not the room as the

reason to go to OSH. Hope to see many of you faceless people there. To me

Hello everyone.  ..I'm finally going to Oshkosh this year..I'm excited:)  I was wondering how many of you are going to Airventure this year--I'd like to put some faces to the names I've been seeing this past year or so.  Is there a "Lancair Tent" or something like that where all of the different aircraft are?  I've never been and I am definately looking forward to it.  Any pointers for first-timers would also be appreciated.

[Both the Lancair kit and certified factories will have tents at Oshkosh where you can meet up with the factory folks and for sure bump into more than a few of your LML buddies.  Also, on Sunday, 8/1/04 I will be hosting the annual Lancair Builders' Forum in pavillion 5 labelled the Aircraft Shopper Online Pavilion.  We'll have a great group of guest speakers once again, I hope you'll be there.  The factory will also be putting on its annual dinner, although the details of time and location have yet to be finalized.  At any rate, there will be plenty of opportunity for you to mingle with the Lancair community... I guarantee you'll have a great time.

If ,and only if, you are flying in practice slow flight!  I don't mean
stalls or approach to stalls, I mean slow flight.  Lancair fliers are stuck
behind spam can slugs with pilots that think the speed limit is a max and that
their objective is to fly as slow as possible below the speed limit.  This
is the only reason that I have chosen to enter the AirVenture Cup Dash - I feel
more comfortable approaching OSH at race speeds rather than taking the
higher 120 Knot altitude and falling in behind two twins trying to test
VMC.
 
Practice slow flight and turns for 30 minutes at a time.  Get the
numbers down cold.  Use flaps and gear if it helps. Practice this and you
will feel much more comfortable when flying to OSH.
 
If you are driving, go like hell until near OSH.  Then, just accept
the ticket and find a parking spot.
 
I hate to fly slow...

Adam, great idea! (having a plan)  #1 Find a place to stay, check for

housing on http://www.airventure.org/ and consider Private Housing.  We

have stayed within a 4 block walk of the field with some of the nicest

folks that treat us like family, reasonable too.



Make a daily schedule to utilize your time.  Lancair has a Banquet on

Sat. night (buy tickets at their booth) and a Lancair Builders Forum is

held every year in one of the Forum Buildings on the field.



If you can only stay a couple of days there will be things you will not

have time to do so stay as long as possible.  



Hit the Fly Market for surplus tools, parts, etc. as soon as you get

there if you need anything, the best stuff goes fast.  (I bought a

surplus production quality pneumatic angle drill and a handfull of bits

for $30 that must have cost hundreds, works fine) You can find reamers,

titanium fasteners, etc. that are too cheap to pass up (see goal below)

Be careful, some stuff is pure junk so make sure of what you are buying.





Fri and Sat are the best days to see airplanes, the most planes are on

the field then. Study the parking layout to know where homebuilts,

warbirds, ultralights, antiques, etc. are located--it's a HUGE field.



Exhibitors are there all week so catch them on the way to the next thing

on your list.  It is also easy to miss something.  (Last year I got

lucky and caught the Chief Engineer of the new Honda Aircraft Engine in

the Continental Booth the day he was there, he answered all questions to

the third decimal and had pretty good english too---sold me!)  If

something new is going to be rolled out, vendors will burn the midnight

oil to get it to Airventure.



Forums, you can learn a lot from the speakers, many are the Designer,

the Factory Expert, the Guy Who Wrote the Book (or sometimes they are

just the guy selling a book,) mostly a Who's Who of every aspect of

Aviation.  



If it is your first time you probably will not get to see or do

everything you want, 1979 was the first time I went, haven't missed

since.



PS: Your goal should be search out the "deals" and save enough to pay

for the trip..............just kidding.

Maybe you're right.  This could be interesting. If you plan on
arriving Monday the 26 at midday, note that the Warbird Approach might be a bit
busy - An Armada of T6s from ARR and some number of Racers (Last year 76) flying
low and fast, having made the turn north at RFD, will all be converging -
TCASs turned off.

You are displaying your ignorance of airline flying.  This is common
in the U.S. today, due to the millions of stockholder money spent by airline
presidents like Lorenzo, Wolfe, Crandall, Carty, and others on advertising
to down grade airline pilots.  There was an economic reason for this,
cheaper wages meant more money in these thieves pockets, not cheaper airline
tickets.  Examine the records, airline pilots are safer in any type of
machine.  Not all ATP holders are airline pilots!

Tomas,

Taxing off the hard surface puts a large strain on the gear and linkage.

Take is a slow as you can. If it's really rough, shut it down and get some

volunteers to help push it where you want it.

Try taxiing in a 360 with 300-3 tires on the grass at Oshkosh!.  You should

be fine with a L-IV.  Just take it slow.  It has been dry for the last few

days except a little light rain at OSH as I write this. The forecast looks

good for the weekend.  



You are all invited to the Lantzair Flyers Corn Roast on Friday night at the

Blue and White striped tent on Knapp street just south of Paul's Park and

the John Deer Tram House.  You can't miss the large American Flag and our

multi-Flying Club Sign in front.  We eat at 6 pm Friday.  Bring ice or beer,

whatever, or just a good aviation story to tell around the campfire.

I would suggest shutting off your engine when they ask you to taxi off the

paved surface.  

A small Lancair broke his prop in the grass the last time I was at OSH.

Taxi slow, be careful of the drainage ditches and depressions so that you don't strike your prop, and follow the instrucitons of the flagmen. When in doubt, shut it down and a gang of folks will arrive to help you push it into spot. Better safe than sorry-- and by the way, I do not recommend landing or taking off a IV or IVP on grass.

Word of caution;(IV)

Pressurize hyd sys (gear down natch) BEFORE allowing a gaggle to push/ pull airplane fwd in soft dirt. Prevents breaking down lock pins in Actuators.

Usually the only ones who say not to use grass have never tried grass! I do
it all the time, it is not as nice on the air filter but other than that not a

Hi Berni,

On the 4 occasions that I have flown into Airventure(twice in my Propjet) I have filed IFR flight plans and have found this to be a relative nonevent and IMHO a safer way to arrive at OSH during notam time.  Perhaps I was just lucky but generally they've vectored me right in.  Read the notam as you'll need a reservation time for IFR arrival.  I won't be going this year but have a great time!

I will be flying into Wittman Regional (OSH) for the first time on Friday, July 25th which is the first day the NOTAM is in effect.  I have been told that the warbird arrival is the best to use if flying a Lancair Legacy.  First of all, is the warbird arrival the one I should be using?  Second, any suggestions from those of you that have done this before would be sincerely appreciated.

Has anyone done their own reprogramming of the VM 1000 chip to modify features I.e. check lists?  Please post process and recommendations.
