Tom,

There is no "definitive answer" to Oshkosh parking for Lancairs. The basic rule in the Home Built Parking (HBP) area is: first to arrive--pretty much your choice of parking spot; everyone else fits around you until you leave. There is no "reserved parking" unless you pay EAA for a booth with parking spot--as Lancair does. We've tried to park on the west side of the taxiway that parallels RWY 18/36, near the north end. Lancair had a large tent in this area for many years, and we always congregated near the tent. Lancair now has a booth/display area in the main pedestrian walking area near AeroShell (now Phillips?) Square, so this "rally point" is no longer in place for us. Some of us have tried to continue to park in this area--with mixed results--but this is not available this year.

I have suggested we park near east/west taxiway P1,  west of, and near the north end of Rwy 18/36, and Jeannie Schneider, the (volunteer) head of HBP parking for at least the last 10 years, is working this for us. The reason for recommending we not park in "our traditional area" this year is because of the Thunderbird Airshow. Available parking along the north/south parallel taxiway will be limited, and access to any airplanes parked there will be restricted during show times. I understand the no-spectators-allowed "burn line" will be approximately at the old "walking lane" parallel to the north/south taxiway within the area where we traditionally parked. This means about half the space we've had in the past in this area is not available. Also, the Evolutions need to stay on or very close to a hard surface. Their footprint/tire loading is higher than the smaller Lancairs, and they have a particular problem if the ground is even a little bit soft.

SO...by parking on /near P1, we can taxi on hard surface almost all the way;  and the EVOs can stay on hard surface all the way to the P1 parking pad (see airfield diagram for depiction). If you want to park in this area with the rest of us, either add "LANCAIR" to your HBP sign, or make and show a separate "LANCAIR" sign. That's Jeannie's crew signal to direct you to the P1 area. If you want to park elsewhere, just don't show your "LANCAIR" sign and they will direct you to any available spot.

And to re-emphasize what I wrote before: If you're being directed to go somewhere you don't want to go, just do it anyway...please go along with the marshallers to where they direct you. Then shut down and talk to them with the engine off--and off the main taxiways; on the grass if you can. They will go overboard to get you  where  you want to go...most likely with a "follow-me" motorcycle lead. What does not work is trying to communicate this by yelling out of the cockpit with the engine running. What seems a simple request to you is usually not, as they have to coordinate the movement of MANY other airplanes in/around the HBP areas.

Looking forward to seeing you all at AirVenture. Remember that our Lancair/LOBO forum is at 1300 in Forum Tent 2 on MONDAY, and our banquet (prior reservations REQUIRED) starts at 1700 on Thursday evening at the Best Western Waterfront Hotel downtown.

Write me directly if you have a specific question/issue, or back through the LML if it might apply to all of us, and I'll do my best to answer or find one...

Bob

Relayed from Jeannie Schneider:

Bob has it pretty well down to a science!  We should get him as a HBP volunteer!  Just kidding Bob!

As he states there is no "reserved" parking per say.... we try to keep like aircraft together.  "Lancairland" has pretty much been right by where the Lancair tent used to be.  But the contingent of Lancairs has grown and so it has evolved to having the "big guys"  Lancair IV's, XP's and Evolutions to park closer to hard surface just a few rows away, physically, but in the general area of the other Lancairs.  I'm sure over time, it might change again to have all of you together which would be the best solution.  But just as everything else, AirVenture is trying a new thing this year with the Thunderbirds being there the weekend of Aug 1st. this has put a major crimp in our configuration of the flightline which will be pushed back to the speaker poles that weekend.  Thus it is probably more desireable to have the larger Lancairs go just to the west of "Lancairland".

When you approach the HB area, you will be directed to go straight down P1 and they should turn you in at the second or third hard surface turn off to the left.  Be sure to have your sign (with large font or BLACK lettering in your window - HBP - Lancair) and our wonderful hardworking marshallers will get you where you need to go.

This being mine and my husbands last year at OSH.... we look forward to seeing all of you... PLEASE, please, look us up on the flightline... we would like to thank you for your participation and feedback of how we are doing... it helps to make your visit next year go even smoother.

We wish you all a safe flight to OSH and parking your wonderful aircraft for the show!

I am leaving RHV (San Jose CA) tomorrow, Friday morning, and plan to be at KOSH on Monday with my nephew. We will pitch a tent in homebuilt camping (HBC), and walk to visit the other Lancair folks. Stops along the way at KAPA (Centennial, Denver), and KOKK (Kokomo Indiana) to pick up my nephew.

See you soon!
