Those of you seeking more speed, have ordered a Legacy or just interested

in a good read might want to pick up the September 2000 issue of "Air &

Space" at your nearest Border's.   Greenamyer is building a Legacy,

installing a 3 inch longer engine mount (heard that one before haven't we),

a stock IO550, turbocharged, titanium rods, cut-down pistons, water-alcohol

"injection" and a big 75 inch three bladed custom Hartzell for the sole

purpose of beating the Lancair IV in the Sport Class at Reno 2000.  (I could

have sworn Orin told me just 9 months ago the challenge they were facing

with the Legacy was making it go as fast as the 360.  Vern must have come up

with some special parts for that Legacy kit.)   Actually there is probably

more to it than the challenge of beating the IV but not the way the article

is written.  And of course there is more to Orin's comments about the Legacy

than is presented.  I am sure he gets more than one hairbrained dumb---

question a day from some wild-eyed daydreamer looking to put something or

other on it somewhere to do god knows what to the neighborhood and

everyone's insurance rates.  Orin is captioned in one picture as a

"salesman" with a drill, no mention of his having built the turbo'd

predecessor to the Legacy.  For all the talk of Morss in the article you

would think they could have included a picture of him on the victory ramp

with the IV.   Better yet, they should go back and do another article about

Morss, his accomplishments and contributions to experimental aviation.

Greenamyer ejected, didn't Morss ride one in?

The aritcle has a nice picture of a Legacy carrying Greenamyer's 200

dollar Toronado, so you get a feel for the way the fuselage and verticle

stab are configured (assuming that is how it will come to those who have not

helped make it).  And yes, another pilot who has put all his money in his

airplanes.   Those of you driving Pintos may want to save a few bucks and

trade up.  The Pinto might not work as well as a bigger, heavier car as

balast.

Sure would be nice to have Mr Greenamyer and Mr Morss sharing their

thoughts with us on the list but they are probably entering a mandantory

quiet period prior to Reno.
