(Note to our members: as of now, we are still looking ahead to hosting the 2020 Landing in October. Should that change, we will notify you.)
Get trained! Be confident! Stay safe! These are our objectives for the 2020 LOBO Landing October 15-17 in Henderson Nevada. Play your cards right and you will have a winning hand when it comes to flying and maintaining your aircraft. As our agenda takes shape, we would like to update you on our progress. The exact agenda is still under construction but we can offer a preview of what we have in store for our members and guests. Remember to make your room reservations soon. Our block is filling fast, and this time of year in Las Vegas is extremely popular. We are also looking for members to assist in planning and helping the board members. See below for ways you can help. LOBO is all of us together, and volunteers are much needed for our success!
The Green Valley Ranch Resort and Casino will host our group. This is a luxury resort property with many amenities. Click here to make your reservations at the special LOBO rate of $190/night. You can also call the hotel directly at (866)782-9487. Mention the Lancair Owners and Builders Organization and use the code GCILOBO.
If you plan to fly your aircraft into KHND, you can rent a car either from Hertz (702-431-6016) or Enterprise (702-263-8894) and pick up your car at the airport. You can also use ride sharing or a taxi to get from the Henderson airport to Green Valley Ranch Resort. It is about a 10 minute drive. The hotel does offer a shuttle to and from the Las Vegas (McCarran) airport.
The LOBO Landing kicks off on Thursday morning with a welcome from the Board, followed by our annual business meeting. We plan to elect board members as well as bring you up to date on the latest developments and plans. Look for feature presentations by our gold sponsors.
Thursday afternoon will be devoted to ground school. Remember that you can satisfy your annual recurrent ground training requirement by attending these educational sessions. Each aircraft type has been assigned a lead instructor who will offer several briefings specific to that type during the course of the conference. We are also seeking additional presentations from you, our members, to help spread best practices among our membership. Please email Sandy Gainza (s.gainza [at] lancairowners.com) if you'd be willing to contribute!
Friday morning brings us Captain Stewart Harro, our Friday keynote speaker. He is a 777 Captain and the Managing Director of Air Safety and Regulatory Compliance at FedEx Express. Stewart has more than 40 years of flying experience, is a long-time check airman on multiple fleets and has served in leadership roles in Flight Training, Flight Operations and Air Safety. In his current role, Capt. Harro will address our group about what we in general aviation can learn from safety culture initiatives taken by FedEx.
We also plan to schedule a "Partner in Command" course on Friday, which will include emergency operations as well as aircraft familiarization for our right seat companions. The Partner in Command ground session will be followed by in aircraft instruction for those who would like more familiarity with their aircraft radio, transponder and autopilot. The afternoon in-aircraft portion of the Partner in Command course will take place at the Henderson airport. Out at the airport on Friday, we hope to arrange several maintenance clinics featuring different types of aircraft.
Friday evening's social event will be casual and take place at the Henderson airport. We are working with the local FBOs on the details.
Saturday features Pete Zaccagnino as our morning keynote speaker. Pete has flown over 23,000 hours in more than 270 aircraft types and flight tested over 685 aircraft. He owns High Performance Aircraft Group, which performs flight test services for several manufacturers, as well as U.S. and foreign militaries. Pete holds several licenses and a variety of type ratings in jets and former military aircraft. Pete’s company manages several corporate jets, and he spends 3-4 months each year on custom-tailored world tours for his customers. Pete has trained many pilots; among them dozens of LOBO members. Pete's background in meteorology will be on display as he conducts sessions on aviation weather, aeronautical decision making; and offers lessons learned from flying small aircraft all over the world.
Saturday afternoon features presentations by our members and sponsors. There may be more action out at the airport with a build shop forum and panel discussion. Saturday afternoon may also be an opportunity to sightsee in the area before the evening festivities begin.
Judy Pastusek is planning an agenda for the "Fly Girls" which will integrate with the basic Landing agenda of social and educational activities. We will definitely have a ladies luncheon, ground school and adventures tailored to our Las Vegas/ Henderson location!
The LOBO banquet will be held Saturday evening, featuring our silent auction presented by auctioneer Colyn Case. We are very pleased to announce our evening speaker, astronaut Mike Mullane. Colonel (Ret) Mullane was born in Wichita Falls, Texas but spent much of his youth in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he currently resides. He was a child of the space race and in the late 1950’s embarked on his own rocket experiments in the deserts near his home. Upon graduation from West Point, he was commissioned in the United States Air Force. As a Weapon Systems Operator aboard RF-4C Phantom aircraft, he completed 134 combat missions in Vietnam. Mullane was selected as a Mission Specialist in 1978 in the first group of Space Shuttle Astronauts. He completed three missions aboard shuttles Discovery (STS-41D) and Atlantis (STS-27 & 36) before retiring from NASA and the Air Force. Mullane has been inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame and is the recipient of many awards, including the Air Force Distinguished Flying Cross, Legion of Merit and the NASA Space Flight Medal. In addition to authoring several books, Colonel Mullane has established himself as an acclaimed professional speaker on the topics of teamwork, leadership and safety. He has educated, entertained, inspired and thrilled tens of thousands of people from every walk of business and government with his unique programs. We are honored he has agreed to inspire our group with his presentation. Click here to visit Mike's website.
LOBO Landing 2020 needs your help and support. The board members are working hard to create an educational, fun and memorable gathering, but we need volunteers to help put things together. Please let Sandy Gainza (s.gainza [at] lancairowners.com) know if you can assist in the following ways:
- Help with registration and check in, both at the hotel and at the Henderson airport on Wednesday and Thursday (October 14 and 15) Help tying down aircraft and welcoming arrivals would be great.
- Donate items for the silent auction. We are looking for donations of stays in vacation homes or timeshares in addition to material items appealing to pilots and non-pilots alike.
- Help promoting and running the silent auction. Colyn needs help making signs and promotional materials for the auction. He could also use some help with checkout when the auction ends.
- Assist with the in-aircraft briefings for our partners in command at the airport on Friday. We need folks who are patient and good at explaining the functions of their avionics and autopilots to non-pilots.
- Present original and educational material to our members. "First hand" presentations by LOBO members are especially well appreciated. We need pilots/owners of all types of Lancairs and Evolutions to participate! Please submit your outline and ideas to Bob Pastusek (rpastusek [at] gmail.com) or Jeff Edison(jedison360 [at] gmail.com).
- Solicitation for, or donations of useful items for our welcome kits. Creative ideas welcome here!
- Ideas/donations of door prizes for the Flygirls luncheon. This traditional event is something the LOBO ladies all look forward to, and the prizes make it even more exciting.
LOBO President George Rosel has been working hard on our social agenda. Look for announcements about a visit to the famous Las Vegas strip on Thursday evening, a tour of Nellis Air Force base on Sunday morning, and more. All in all, we all want to make this Landing a very special time to reinvigorate your commitment to safe flying as well as have fun with your fellow Lancair/EVO pilots. Our group flies some very unique aircraft; our organization can only be what our members make it. Let's make the 2020 Landing a full house and stack the deck for the continued growth of LOBO!
