LOBO Landing Asheville Plans Proceed! October 5-8, 2022

by Sandy Gainza, LOBO Board

LOBO will host the annual LOBO Landing on October 6-8, 2022 in Asheville, North Carolina. The host hotel is the Hilton Biltmore Park. The activities begin with an informal welcome reception on Wednesday evening, October 5 and end Saturday, October 8 at noon.

Plans are moving ahead but we need a few good volunteers to make this event happen. First, we need member speakers! If you have a topic that you think might be of interest to others, we want to hear from you! Topic ideas are:

Maintenance Techniques

Condition Inspection Tricks and Tips

Adding an AOA Indicator to your aircraft

Interesting Places to Fly

Model Specific Topics (EVO, 360, ES, IV, Legacy)

We need a chairperson for our silent auction, which will be held on Friday evening, October 7. Our auction is a key fundraiser for the organization. Please consider helping me with this important role. Colyn Case has agreed to advise if necessary but is unable to take the task on this year. He has prepared a complete document package to make it easier to organize. If you could please help LOBO with this very important job, let Sandy Gainza know ASAP.

We have several sponsors already committed and look forward to welcoming these partners to the Landing: Aerotronics, Risse Racing, Evolution Aircraft, Ladd Gardner, and Pratt and Whitney, to name a few that have agreed to sponsor and attend. These sponsors help keep the cost of the LOBO Landing down and add value by providing information about their support of Lancair aircraft and owners.

We hope to begin the registration process in May. Early registration for pilots will be $599 and $399 for partners, the same as 2021. Please make your hotel reservations (which can be modified up to one day before arrival with no charge) now! Here is the link to the Hilton website:

Gary Reeves (pilotsafety.org) has agreed to be our keynote speaker. Gary has extensive IFR instruction experience and will explain how best to use your GPS and autopilot for single pilot IFR operations. He will also conduct a session on getting the most out of ForeFlight.

Matt Speare, one of our LOBO-endorsed instructors, has agreed to assist with the Partner in Command ground school as well as coordinate ground school briefings. We are in the process of lining up several LOBO-endorsed instructors to attend the meeting and present material for our ground school portion of the conference. We sincerely appreciate that Matt and Gary are coordinating the Wings credit for our program.

I recently traveled to Asheville and met with the airport representatives who will be helping our pilots. Signature Flight Support of Asheville is the FBO there. They recommend reserving rental cars through the FBO (National and Enterprise), as they are then able to drive the car to your aircraft and help you unload immediately after landing. They also will help us organize airport activities which we are now working on, including a repeat of the partner in-cockpit training that was so well received in Las Vegas. The website for Signature Flight Support in Asheville is: https://www.signatureflight.com/locations/AVL.

We have arranged special events for members--before and after the Landing. The first is an informal meet and greet at the Sierra Nevada Brewery, located across the street from the Asheville airport. We hope everyone arriving Wednesday will come grab a beverage and socialize a bit before the formal LOBO meeting begins Thursday morning. The second is a tour of the famous Biltmore Estate on Saturday, October 8 immediately after the meeting adjourns at noon. We have arranged for up to 60 tickets that include a late lunch at the Stable Cafe, and a tour of the house. I am working on transportation at this point and will have a final cost per person for this event soon. The Biltmore tour will not be included in the conference registration fee and is an optional add-on.

Everyone I have spoken to in Asheville emphasizes the beauty of this area in the fall. They also tell me that many, many people come to visit the area in October. I therefore encourage anyone attending to think about dinner and rental car reservations soon, and you MUST make reservations at the Hilton under our block as soon as you possibly can.  Your experience will be much better if you plan ahead!
