2018 LOBO/Lancair Landing

It's That Time of Year Again!

by claudette colwell

Join us for the 2018 LOBO Landing at San Marcos, the friendliest GA airport in Texas—which in case you didn’t know it is a very friendly state!

NOTE: In addition to being friendly, Texans are fanatical about their football. San Marcos will be hosting a popular football game on the weekend of the Landing, so hotel rooms are filling up. If you haven't made your reservations yet you need to git 'er done!

What to Expect

The staff at Redbird Skyport is eagerly awaiting our arrival; they’ve offered the use of their entire facility, and they’re ready to roll out the red carpet. Your LOBO Board plans to take full advantage of their hospitality so you can enjoy this year’s Landing at a very nice price. This year we didn’t have to guarantee a block of rooms at a hotel in order to have meeting space available to us so you can stay at the hotel of your choice; you can find a list of them on the event registration page of our website. Additionally, we didn’t have to contract with a hotel for meals, so the airport café will be catering our lunch. All of this means this year’s registration rates are genuinely Texas Friendly.

Arrive in time to pick up your credentials beginning at 11:30a on Friday, October 5. Our exhibiting sponsors will be in place, ready for consultation, and forums will begin promptly at 12:30p.  Brad Simmons will review some important tips on maintenance (schedule for this TBA), and his session will continue on the ramp at the end of formal forums.  We’ll have a mid-afternoon break and finish at 5:30p for a meet-n-greet on the ramp. Bring your own favorite beverage, we’ll provide some nibbles. Plan to enjoy the rest of Friday evening with friends while eating at a local restaurant of your choice; bon appetite!

Saturday morning forums begin at 8:30am. In case you didn’t get up in time for breakfast, LOBO will have some coffee, donuts and bagels on hand. The ladies will rendezvous with Judy Pastusek at the airport at 9:45a and carpool to the famous Factory Outlets in San Marcos, which line both sides of street in the shopping district and offer premium stores like Neiman Marcus, Pottery Barn, Prada and Chicos to name a few. Psssst, guys! If you want your wife to join you make sure she knows about this shopping trip. And tell her soon, because reservations are required to join the ladies for lunch at the Outback Steakhouse.

Back at the airport we’ll take a mid-morning break, followed by a few more forums before lunch at noon. Chris Zavatson will share his vast knowledge of several specific issues - emphasizing hydraulics during the weekend as well.  There’s also a break-out session with our engine manufacturers from Continental and Pratt & Whitney. And, of course, all our sponsors and presenters will be in attendance throughout the weekend to answer your questions.

Following a day of learning, we’ll switch to fun! Enjoy an authentic Texas BBQ dinner and then Texas Two-Step your way around the dance floor to the music of a local Country & Western band. If you’re shy, try starting with an adult beverage, served up by a real, live bartender!  For 2 hours we will be hosted by Lancair International at the bar with beer and wine - after that it's a no-host bar.

Sunday we'll start again at 8:30am with everything you need or want to know (not really everything, but you know what I mean!) about Lancairs. If you two-stepped your way to exhaustion on Saturday night, don’t worry; we’ll have more coffee and sweets available to help you wake up. Sunday includes a break-out session with the Garmin representative for the many flying behind Garmin panels.  We’ll wind up our forums at noon, with the annual LOBO Member Meeting to follow from 12:00 to 12:30. During the election please limit your vote to the number of dues-paying members in the family.

After the Landing you may want to extend your visit—both San Marcos and nearby New Braunfels boast beautiful rivers that are great for drifting, snorkeling (you can see the bottom), or paddle boarding. Both the San Marcos and Comal Rivers are a pleasant 72 degrees, and equipment rentals are available. Floating down river on an inner tube down to a take-out point is a favorite Texas pastime. The ride includes some mild rapids along the way—certainly safe enough for all but really young kids. Also within short driving distance are San Antonio and its famous attractions, the River Walk and The Alamo, and Austin, TX, the Live Music Capital of the World. Steve and I have been back in Texas for the past 11 years and lived there previously for 23. Bob Pastusek is also a Texas native, and he and Judy recently moved back to Ft. Worth. We’d be mighty pleased to steer you in any direction you wish to go with recommendations.

Come experience the 2018 Landing and enjoy some wonderful hospitality…Texas style!
